Is saffron good for your health?

Zafferia Saffron Spoon

Much has been said and written about the health effects of our favorite spice. Saffron is alleged to fight depressions and anxiety, help fight cancers and inflammations, lower cholesterol levels, enhance mail sex drive, reduce risk for Alzheimer, reduce premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and many more.

First, of all, we consume saffron (and lots of it) because we just love it.

The good thing is: Saffron is almost calory-free, vegan (and kosher). Whether it has a positive effect on dietary control is hard to say. The variety of saffron receipts (see our upcoming blog posts on our favorite ones) honestly make eating less such a somber thought.

Yet, it seems likely that saffron has some serious antioxidation effects. There is a variety of antioxidants in the red spice. Regular consumptions help to reduce oxidative stress and fight free radicals (oxygen-containing molecules that promote aging and illnesses) – making it a potential protector for a large variety of chronic health conditions.

Also, there is some compelling evidence that saffron may serve as a “mood-booster” when consumed regularly and even some that it may help enhance your love life.

We are no scientists and don’t give any medical advice. However, the bottom line is that saffron is probably good for you – if enjoyed within reason. Up to 1,5g (almost an entire pack of Zafferia powder) can be consumed daily without any health effects  – a dose only for hardened saffron lovers.

So, enjoy it and no regrets!
